Description | This is a particularly imposing piece among the many large vessels of the Yuan dynasty. It originally had a lid. Dividing the surface into several bands, filling each of them with various decorations, is one of the typical features of Yuan blue-and-white ware. This jar has a rather rare decoration of two large horizontal bands in the center of the body, one containing a design of dragons and clouds and the other peony scrolls. Incised decoration has been applied to the peony petals and leaves before drawing in cobalt blue, resulting in producing a remarkably strong and deep color of the cobalt blue pigment. Two ears in the shape of an animal mask, washed with cobalt blue, are applied on the shoulders, both bearing holes to hold rings. |
