Description A vase with a small mouth and wide, swolen shoulders are known as a meiping vase. While blue-and-white wares of the Yuan dynasty usually have decorations covering the whole body, this vase retains relatively large amount of undecorated white space above and below the central decoration, which is uncommon. The white space effectively emphasizes the large peony scroll motif in the center, providing a sense of refinement to this ware. On the petals and leaves, incised decoration is applied so that the cobalt blue will develop into a stronger, darker color, giving a three-dimensional effect. A lidded meiping vase with a similar decorative composition was unearthed in Gaoan County, Jiangxi Province.
