Description | Sue ware is a hard-bodied, dark gray earthen ware produced through new techniques, introduced from the Korean Peninsula in the first half of the 5th century. Bottles like this piece, a long neck with trumpeted mouth, were commonly produced during the Nara period (710- 794) though this example is exceptionally large, making it one of the masterpieces among Sue ware. Due to firing in high temperature, the ashes that fall on the shoulder were melted to form a natural glaze. It is said to have been excavated in Kayo in Tenri City, Nara Prefecture. |
