Description | Earliest examples of underglaze copper-red decoration are from the Yuan dynasty. During the Hongwu reign, the technique made progress of its own and such wares were produced in large numbers particularly at that time. Forms and motifs share many common elements with blue-and-white ware, one of the causes being the decline in the amount of importation of high-quality cobalt blue pigment. Hongwu's preference of the red color might have also affected the development of underglaze copper-red decoration. While the overall decoration of this piece has a pale, grayish tone as it was difficult to achieve a bright red color out of the copper-red pigment, it rather matches well with the elegant and refined motifs. |
