Description Iron-painted celadon has a decoration painted in iron pigment. In this work, the baoxianghua decoration has been carefully and finely executed, which is quite exceptional for iron-painted celadon. There are some opinions that the decoration at the lower section of the vase can find its prototype in Cizhou ware of China, although the truth is yet to be clarified. Examples of iron painted celadon were discovered in the early kilns of the late 10th century although full-scale production began in the 12th century around the Jinsan-ri kiln area in Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do. The kiln which produced this piece cannot be identified, however, for iron-painted celadon was also discovered at other kilns including Sadang-ri kiln in Gangjin-gun. The wrecked ship that sank on the seabed of Eodu-ri, Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do was carrying meiping vases in iron-painted celadon, which unveiled the trade routes.
