The decoration was painted in copper oxide under the glaze and fired in reducing atmosphere, producing a bright red color. The vase has a slender, long neck with a small mouth and the shoulder bears a band of lotus petals in black and white inlay. On three sections of the body, peonies are depicted in white inlay onto which accents of underglaze copper red are effectively applied. There are no examples of celadon with underglaze copper red decoration in China and it is considered that this technique was a Goryeo invention. A shard with a similar decoration - underglaze copper red decoration on a white inlay motif - was discovered at the kiln site of Yuchun-ri in Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do. |
