Ceramic flasks made its appearance in the Unified Silla period and they were used as wine or water containers. This flask was made by luting the rims of two dish-shaped pieces, a forming technique not practiced until the Joseon dynasty. The use of this technique was only for buncheong high-class works and white porcelain. The features of this piece are the bold peony motif in planar inlay, the tiny raindrop pattern on the above, and the use of black inlay along with the common white inlay. A shard with similar decoration was found at Udong-ri kiln in Boan-myeon, Jeollabuk-do, suggesting that this piece was also made in the first half of the 15th century. |
